Google Business Profile setup, optimization and reviews

For a local service business, the three map results sitting above the normal search listings are the most valuable real estate on the internet. Getting into them is unglamorous, controllable work: an accurate profile, consistent details, and reviews arriving steadily rather than in bursts.

What this service is, in plain terms

A Google Business Profile is not a directory listing you fill in once. It is a live surface that Google reads constantly: categories, services, service area, hours, attributes, photos, questions, posts and reviews. Businesses that treat it as active infrastructure outrank businesses that treat it as a form they completed in 2019.

Three things decide local ranking: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your customers closer, but you can make relevance unambiguous through correct categories and detailed service listings, and you can build prominence through reviews, citations and a website that supports the profile.

Reviews are the piece most businesses handle badly. Not because they have unhappy customers, but because asking is nobody's job. A simple system that asks every customer at the right moment, through a channel they already use, changes review count and rating faster than anything else available.

The situation

What usually brings people to this page

  • The profile is incomplete or wrong

Primary category chosen carelessly, no secondary categories, no service list, hours that were right before the schedule changed, and a service area drawn to include places you never travel to. Every gap is relevance you are handing to a competitor.

  • Reviews arrive by accident

Eleven reviews, most of them from two years ago, and the last one is a complaint sitting unanswered at the top of the profile. Recency and velocity matter, and so does the fact that you clearly replied.

  • Your details disagree across the web

One phone number on the website, another on Yelp, an old suite number on a directory. Inconsistency undermines confidence in which record is correct and dilutes the signal that should be reinforcing your ranking.

  • Photos are stock or absent

Two stock images and a logo. Profiles with real photographs of the team, vehicles, premises and finished work get more engagement, and engagement feeds back into visibility.

Scope

What you get

Everything below is included in a standard engagement. Anything outside it is quoted separately and named before work starts.

  • Claim, verify and secure the profile

Including recovery of profiles claimed by a former marketing vendor or an employee who has left, and correct ownership in an account you control.

  • Category and service optimization

Primary and secondary categories chosen against what competitors ranking above you use, plus a complete service list with individual descriptions rather than a single vague entry.

  • Complete profile build-out

Hours including holidays, attributes, service area sized honestly, business description written for humans and machines, products where relevant, and a booking or contact path.

  • Photo and media program

Guidance on what to shoot, plus a schedule for adding real photos regularly, because a profile that gets fresh media is a profile Google sees as active.

  • Review generation system

An automated request triggered at the right point in your job workflow, sent by text or email with a direct link, plus printed cards or QR codes for in-person moments.

  • Review response

Templates and coaching, or fully managed responses. Every review answered, including the negative ones, in a tone that reads well to the next customer.

  • Citation cleanup

Name, address and phone corrected and made consistent across the directories that still carry weight, and duplicates removed.

  • Monthly upkeep and reporting

Posts, questions answered, new photos, and a report on map views, searches, calls, direction requests and review growth.

How it runs

The process, start to finish

  1. 01

    Audit and competitor comparison

We score your profile against the businesses currently ranking in the map pack for your terms, so the gaps are specific rather than theoretical.

    Week 1
  2. 02

    Fix the profile

Categories, services, description, hours, attributes, service area, photos and links. Most of the available gain is here and it lands quickly.

    Weeks 1–2
  3. 03

    Turn reviews into a routine

Wire the request into your existing job or invoicing workflow so it happens without anyone remembering, and agree a response process.

    Weeks 2–4
  4. 04

    Maintain and measure

Monthly posts, media, question monitoring, citation checks and reporting on map pack position for your priority terms.

    Ongoing

Outcomes

What changes when this is working

  • Map pack visibility for local searches

Accurate categories and services plus review momentum are the levers that move local ranking, and both are within your control.

  • Steady review growth

A systematic request turns reviews from an occasional favor into a predictable trickle, which is what recency-weighted ranking rewards.

  • More calls and direction requests

Profile actions are measurable. Most of the improvement shows up as phone calls that never touch the website at all.

  • Better first impressions

A complete profile with recent photos, answered questions and replied-to reviews looks like a business that is currently operating and cares.

Investment

How pricing works

The optimization is a one-off fixed price. Ongoing management is a modest monthly fee, and plenty of clients take the setup and run the upkeep themselves, which is a perfectly good outcome.

What moves the number

  • Whether the profile needs recovery from a previous owner or agency.
  • Number of locations, each of which is a separate profile with its own work.
  • How much citation cleanup the audit uncovers.
  • Whether review requests need custom integration with your job or invoicing system.
  • Whether you want review responses handled for you or written in house.

Verification is controlled by Google, not by us. Postcard or video verification occasionally adds a week or two and no agency can shorten it.

Typical timelines

Questions

Frequently asked

Going deeper? Google Business Profile ranking factors

Profile changes are usually reflected within days, and businesses that were incomplete often see call and direction-request increases inside a month. Competitive positions in a dense category can take a few months of review growth and citation consistency.
